Little did Iren know how many animals she would help with this gift. The inheritance from Iren, which amounted to NOK 2.2 million, enabled us to realize an old dream of a free veterinary clinic. Lisaklinikken is intended to be a clinic for animals of owners who, for various reasons, cannot afford veterinary treatment. Drug addicts are often singled out as an example of people who should not have animals, but our experience suggests that they often do, and we know that the animals do not receive the medical treatment they need. Lisaklinikken is an offer to those animals that fall outside the commercial veterinary offer, and one might call it a kind of Salvation Army or Blue Cross for animals. Veterinarian Caroline Holtet, who is employed to run the clinic, has spent most of this year on project planning, and the doors will open in 2023.
You may be wondering how Fritzie fared? When she came to us, she was a well-matured cat of 16 years. Closer examination by a veterinarian revealed that she had both hyperthyroidism and incipient kidney problems. With proper diet and medication, she recovered well. Due to her health status, she was placed in a permanent foster home, and as the kind and good cat she was, she helped socialize other foster cats. With new feline friends, she lived a rich and fulfilling cat life, but after a year and a half, she suddenly became very ill. There was nothing we could do to help her, so she was allowed to pass.
No one fully knows the extent of Iren’s legacy yet. What is certain is that it will brighten the future for a large number of animals and people. Iren gave no instructions on how her inheritance should be used, which demonstrates great trust. We appreciate this and hope that we have taken care of Iren’s values in a good way with this clinic.
